Nepal’s ex-PM KP Sharma Oli hospitalised with palpitations a day after arrest

Former Nepal prime minister and Communist Party of Nepal (UML) chairman KP Sharma Oli has been admitted to Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital after experiencing episodes of heart palpitations, according to ANI. The development comes just a day after his arrest, adding concern around his health as well as the ongoing political situation.

Doctors are closely monitoring Oli, who has a long history of medical complications following a kidney transplant. He is said to be under observation at the hospital, with existing conditions including hydronephrosis, diabetes, hypertension, hypothyroidism, atrial fibrillation and gallstones.

The Kathmandu District Court has granted permission to keep Oli in custody for five days. However, due to his health condition, he attended the court proceedings virtually from the hospital. Former home minister Ramesh Lekhak, who was also arrested in the same case, was physically produced before the court.

PROTESTS ERUPT IN SUPPORT OF KP SHARMA OLI

Oli’s arrest has triggered protests by supporters of the Communist Party of Nepal (UML), particularly in Kathmandu. Demonstrators gathered demanding his immediate release, leading to clashes with police.

Tensions escalated after confrontations broke out between protesters and security forces. According to officials, demonstrators resorted to stone-pelting, while police responded with baton charges to disperse the crowd. One person was reported injured and at least nine individuals were arrested during the unrest.

The UML had called for nationwide protests following Oli’s arrest, with demonstrations reported in multiple locations. Protesters have also demanded the resignation of Home Minister Sudhan Gurung.

The party has questioned the investigation into the September 8–9, 2025 incidents, calling it biased and demanding that the report led by Gauri Bahadur Karki be scrapped. It has also sought a fair probe into cases of vandalism, arson and looting during the protests, along with action against those responsible.

UML leaders have warned of further protests if Oli and Lekhak are not released.
