In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Washington was making “serious progress” in discussions with Iran, but warned that if a deal is not reached soon, and if the Strait of Hormuz is not kept open, the US would “blow up” Iran’s oil wells, electric generating plants and other critical facilities.
He added that desalination plants supplying clean water to Iran could also be targeted, noting that these facilities had “purposefully not yet [been] touched.”
Trump said such action would be in “retribution” for US soldiers and others he claimed were killed by Iran during what he described as the previous regime’s 47-year “reign of terror.”
Last week, Trump had said that the US would pause attacks on Iran’s energy infrastructure for 10 days, a window that runs until April 6 (US time).
Even as he spoke of progress in talks, Washington has been deploying additional troops to the region. This prompted Iran’s parliamentary leadership to accuse the US of signalling openness to negotiations while preparing for a possible ground invasion, drawing a defiant response from Tehran.
Iranian leaders, however, have denied that any direct talks with the United States are underway.
