The Meteorological Department has warned that temperatures across North India could reach 44 degrees Celsius in the coming week, with heatwave conditions intensifying. The advisory has prompted swift action in Jharkhand, where private schools have revised daily schedules to reduce students’ exposure to the harsh afternoon sun.A directive by the Unaided Schools Association requires the implementation of new timings in all affiliated private schools from Monday onwards. Children must begin their classes at 6:45 AM and finish at 11:30 AM instead of having their afternoon dispersal session. This move is expected to help ensure that kids return home before the heat rises past midday.Timings to become more flexibleAccording to the new schedule, schools will operate during the early morning times when it is cooler. It was pointed out that children would learn better without the effects of hot weather interfering with them. Furthermore, it was stated that the exposure of children to the harsh rays of the sun would become unbearable after 12:00 PM.Reasons for implementing new timingsAs the Vice President of the Unaided Schools Association, Sharath Chandran said that the welfare of the children had been considered first. It was informed that children can get dehydrated easily because of the high temperatures during the journey back home from school. All private schools were consulted regarding this proposal, and they accepted it.Parents made aware via various platformsParents were communicated from Saturday via their cell phones, portal messages, and SMS notifications. Children should now be dropped off at school according to the newly adjusted timetable. Parents have been told to pay extra attention during dispersal periods as temperatures start increasing.Doctors recommend cautionDoctors have advised that children should carry ORS or lemon juice to avoid dehydration. Doctors have also suggested that the kids wear light-colored cotton clothes so that they can avoid overheating. The new time schedule for schools will stay the same until the climate situation improves, and the organization continues tracking temperature changes. It was clear that the current arrangement was only a temporary one, and the organization would keep assessing the situation based on fresh predictions. Cooperation between schools’ administration and local authorities is under way to address any issues. Parents have been warned to be cautious regarding hydration and to protect children from sun exposure during the day.It was reported that more arrangements might be added if temperatures are higher than forecasted in the area in the coming days.
