“That was very unexpected, but incredibly acted upon by the Secret Service and law enforcement,” Trump told reporters at the White House, a day after he and other top US leaders were evacuated from the annual dinner following a shooting incident outside the ballroom.
“A man charged a security checkpoint armed with multiple weapons, and he was taken down by some very brave members of the Secret Service,” Trump said.
AGENT SHOT, VEST TOOK IMPACT
Trump said one Secret Service agent was shot at close range but escaped injury because of a bulletproof vest. “He was shot from very close distance with a very powerful gun, and the vest did the job,” Trump said.
An FBI official said the armed man had fired at a Secret Service agent. The agent was hit in an area covered by protective gear and was not harmed.
SUSPECT IDENTIFIED AS CALIFORNIA MAN
The shooting suspect was identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California, two law enforcement officials told The Associated Press.
Officials said the suspect was taken into custody after the incident. About an hour after being rushed from the event, Trump posted on Truth Social that the “shooter had been apprehended.”
WAS TRUMP THE TARGET?
Asked whether he believed he was the intended target, Trump replied, “I guess.”
He said investigators were still looking into the motive, adding that the attacker was “probably a lone shooter” but that authorities would “find out.”
TRUMP, MELANIA AND TOP OFFICIALS SAFE
Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were rushed out of the dinner by Secret Service agents on Saturday night after the suspect allegedly tried to breach security.
All federal officials at the event, including Trump, were safe.
