The delivery was made by Sharon Simmons, an Arkansas-based DoorDash driver who arrived wearing a “DoorDash Grandma” T-shirt and carrying two bags of the president’s long-time fast food favourite.
“I have a DoorDashorder for you, Mr. President,” Simmons said as she handed over thebags. Trump, speaking to reporters gathered outside, joked whileshowing the order: “This doesn’t look staged, does it?”
He said he arranged the delivery after learning Simmons had received an additional $11,000 under the tax provision. “The reason for this is I heard you picked up an extra $11,000 because the tax bill was so big,” Trump said, calling it part of what he described as a “great big beautiful tax cut bill.”
The “No Tax on Tips” measure, first pushed by Trump during the 2024 campaign, was later included in a broader tax and spending law passed by Republicans. The provision allows eligible workers in tip-based jobs— from bartenders to golf caddies — to deduct a portion of their tips from federal income tax between 2025 and 2028.
Simmons, a grandmother of 10 who began working as a Dasher in 2022, has completed more than 14,000 deliveries. Her visit to the White House marked the first anniversary of the policy.
“It was an incredible honour to represent Dashers from all over the country,”she said, adding that the policy had allowed her to keep more of what she earns.
The delivery quickly turned into an impromptu press interaction, with Trump inviting Simmons to stand beside him. “Would you like to do a little news conference with me?” he asked, before adding with a grin, “These are not the nicest people.”
During the exchange, Trump fielded questions on a range of issues — from the Iran war to an AI-generated image he had shared online — while repeatedly returning to the tax policy.
He asked Simmons about its impact, describing it as “something special,” while she called it “fantastic.”
At one point, Trump asked how she voted. “Maybe,” Simmons replied.
He also appeared to pull cash from his pocket and tip her when reporters asked about tipping at the White House. “Yes, very,” Simmons said when asked if the White House were good tippers.
The interaction included lighter and more awkward moments as well. When asked about broader political issues, Simmons declined to engage, saying, “I’m here about no tax on tips.”
Trump also briefly referenced the Strait of Hormuz during the exchange, underscoring how the informal setting overlapped with wider geopolitical messaging.
Simmons later headed inside the Oval Office as the president moved on.
DoorDash, in a statement, said the policy had already delivered significant gains.“Dashers across the US saved hundreds of millions of dollars last year,” said Max Rettig, the company’s global head of public policy.
